Iīd be slightly scared when using single grade oils, be it 30 or 40 weight. All OHC enginesī cams have delicate bearing clearances. Single grade oils are thicker at starting temperatures than multigrades without giving any benefits when engine is hot, although single grades viscosity might last slightly better. Multigrades flow better when the engine is cold so they protect the plain bearings better. Most of the engine wear happens when engine is cold.
I know Savage manual allows to use single grade oils in consistent climates but I think itīs mostly for emergency situations, like youīre low on oil and have nothing else than single grade to top up. Besides, I havenīt seen any really good single grade oils for years. They seem to be available mostly for heavy equipment such as trucks and tractors.
